IF HUMANITY LEAVES EARTH,
WHAT SHOULD WE TAKE WITH US?
Cargo mass is finite. So is attention.
Anything carried off Earth — seeds, archives, languages, laws, grudges — is carried because someone decided it was worth the weight.
What survives the journey becomes, eventually, what the next people believe humanity was.
Spacecraft have carried deliberate cultural payloads before: the Pioneer plaques, the Voyager Golden Records, engraved names and messages on landers.
Those objects were small and symbolic. A settlement would need working versions of the same idea — food crops, medicine, technical knowledge, legal norms.
Which parts of a civilization are essential and which are habit is not a question instruments can measure.
TAKE THE RECORD
Carry everything that can be carried: languages, archives, music, failures included.
A settlement without deep memory repeats what it cannot remember, and there is no second Earth to consult.
In this reading, continuity is the payload.
TAKE ONLY WHAT WORKS
Carry knowledge, not inheritance. Bring the physics and the seeds; leave the borders, the hierarchies and the old quarrels.
A new place is a rare chance to stop transmitting things that only ever caused harm.
In this reading, leaving something behind is the point.
