Using magnetic-field measurements to investigate hidden structures and materials.

What a method cannot settle matters as much as what it can. Each note below is tagged by how firm the statement is.
- INFERENCE
The measurement identifies conductivity, not substance. Salty liquid water is one strong candidate for a conducting layer, but conductivity alone does not prove it.
- OBSERVATION
Flyby data samples only a few geometries. Depth and thickness remain loosely constrained without sustained orbital coverage.
- HYPOTHESIS
Plasma currents around a body can produce field signatures that must be separated from any internal response.

Magnetometer readings during Galileo flybys showed an induced field consistent with a global conducting layer beneath the ice — the central piece of evidence for a subsurface ocean.
